Montauk Voters Elect Lee White, Handily Pass Budget

Budget approved 218-to-50.

In Montauk, voters easily approved a $18.7 millon budget and elected a new member to the board of education.

Lee White was elected with 160 votes, according to Superintendent Jack Perna. Henora Herlihy received 101 votes.

Theresa Watson did not seek re-election.

The school budget passed 218-to-50 for 2013-14 includes a $180,882 increase, just under 1 percent. The 2012-13 budget was approximately $18.5 million.

The property tax levy increase — subject to the 2 percent tax cap — will increase $145,000 or 0.87 percent. The figure is $16.7 million.

The proposed tax rate for the 2013-14 budget is approximately $54.58 per $100 of assessed value, as compared to the current year's tax rate of approximately $53.30. "Again, this is with an estimated decrease in total assessed value. If assessed value goes up, the tax rate will be less than the proposed," Superintendent Jack Perna said last month when the budget passed.
