Miller, Wilson Elected in Springs

Voters approved the $25.4 million budget by nearly 77 percent on Tuesday night.

In the Springs School district, voters overwhelmingly supported the $25.4 million proposed budget for the 2013-14 school year, while also voting two parents to the school board.

The budget was approved by nearly 77 percent, 383-to-117, according to Eric Casale, the school principal.

Voters also elected two new members to the board of education; Jeff Miller received 437 votes and Adam Wilson received 392 votes.

Martin Drew, the third candidate for school board, received 78 votes, Casale said.

There were two seats up for grabs on the school board. Kathee Burke Gonzalez, the school board president, and Theresa Schurr did not seek re-election. They will step down at the end of June.

By phone Tuesday night, Miller said he wanted to thank everyone for the support. "I will do my best to represent the community with the faith they have showed in me," he said.

The budget passed Tuesday night includes a spending increase of 3.18 percent, or about $782,380. The tax levy is growing 1.3 percent to $23.3 million — well under the cap.

The property tax rate is estimated to go up 3.37 percent, or $3, to $91.97 per $100 of the current assessed value. If you have a house valued at $600,000, and it's assessed value is $6,000, your estimated tax increase is $180. If you have a house valued at $800,000, and it's assessed value is $8,000, your estimated tax increase is $240.
