Sag Harbor Surf Artist Looks for Support With Kickstarter

Lutha Leahy-Miller looks to raise $1,000 to make prints of his art — and supporters get limited edition prints.

Lutha Leahy-Miller, a pen-and-ink artist, is turning to the crowd-funding website Kickstarter to make his next project possible.

Kickstarter helps creative people get the startup capital they need to complete a project. Rather than an artist laying out cash to make works then hoping to find buyers after the fact, with Kickstarter, supporters pledge money upfront, enabling the works to be made.

The Sag Harbor resident and avid surfer, who majored in painting and drawing at University of California, San Diego, is planning a collection of surfing-inspired art and images of skulls.  With the proceeds of the Kickstarter campaign, he will make limited-edition prints to sell at Sag Harbor's Kramoris Gallery, and backers of his campaign will be thanked with prints.

For a $90 pledge, backers will receive a hand-signed and matted 8.5-by-11-inch print. Supporters who pledge $199 will get a 12-by-17-inch signed matted print. Each run of prints is limited to 12 each of the two sizes.

Supporters are only charged if the campaign is successful. If the $1,000 goal is not met by the May 31 deadline, they will owe nothing.

If the campaign is successfully funded, supporters can expect their prints in July.
