First Montauk Playhouse Family Fest Event This Thursday

BreakSk8, a Chicago-based roller skating break dance crew recently featured on NBC's America's Got Talent, will perform at the Montauk Playhouse at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Tickets are available at the Montauk Playhouse website, and will be sold for $15.

This marks the beginning of the third year of the Montauk Playhouse's Family Fest, a series of family-friendly performances every other Thursday through July and August. Proceeds raised by ticket sales will go toward the completion of the Playhouse which opened in 2006. The playhouse itself is housed in a former tennis auditorium built during the 1928-1929 development of Montauk under the control of real estate developer Carl Fischer. At the time of its completion it was considered to be the largest building of this type in the world. Since the opening of the Playhouse in 2006, Project Director Maureen Rutkowski said,"The Playhouse has become the social center of Montauk." The building also houses a child and adult day care center, a gymnasium and a nutrition center. With the new funds the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation hopes to finish the first floor of the building and turn it into an aquatic center with two pools and a multipurpose community room.

On July 25, an orchestral and ballet performance of Peter and the Wolf will take place at 7 p.m. The narrator of the Prokofiev composition and story has yet to be announced. Tickets will be sold for $15.

On August 9, the National Circus Project will give a circus workshop at 4 p.m., teaching participating children various circus acts, like juggling, plate spinning and clowning. At 7 p.m. there will also be a circus performance both events will cost $15 each.

The final Family Fest event will take place on August 23 with a performance by the Harlem Hoopsters at 7 p.m. The hoopsters will demonstrate fancy dribbling and choreographed footwork, displaying "the art of basketball" all done to music.Tickets will cost $15.
