Fine Art Show on Montauk Green Supports Montauk Art Initiatives

Works from more than 70 artists will be on sale all weekend, Aug. 16 to 18.

The Montauk Artists Association’s 19th annual Juried Fine Art Show on the Montauk Green is returning from Aug. 16 to Aug. 18.

The Fine Art Show, which has been running each summer on the Montauk Green since 1994, will feature creations by painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers and printmakers, along with original artwork in glass, ceramics and wood. Long-running participants will return from Israel, Peru and China.  Notable artists include the painters Katie Balas, Yoram Gal and Suzy Scarborough, photographers Bill Kinney, John Deng and the kite photographer Evan Reinheimer, gyotaku artists Jim Roberts and Annie Sessler and digital artist Edward Loedding.

Visitors and customers on the Montauk Green can enjoy the rare opportunity to engage with these artists directly, learning how they adopted the profession and the background on the pieces they have for sale.

Around 70 local and international artists will display and sell their work, with the jury panel deciding who they deem to be the best.

Montauk Artists Association treasurer Anne Weissman said, “We decided not to give a cash prize and have spent the money that would have gone toward a prize to advertising. Instead of just dividing funds among only a few of the artists, this way each artist gets their name out there. We're promoting the artists and hoping to make them big names."

Though the money from art sales all go back to the artists, the association raises money by selling the artists the 85 booth spaces on the green. This is among the association’s biggest fundraising events of the year, including the Memorial Day Art Show.

These funds allow for the continued efforts of the association, such as the Art Depot Gallery at the old Montauk Train station and art classes for children, teens and adults. Weissman was proud of these classes, and said that, “There will also be a booth at the show on the green featuring art produced by kids.”

The festival is open Aug. 16 from noon to 6 p.m. and continues  Aug. 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
