Guild Hall Red Carpet Film Series: Prisoner No More – A Film Screening of Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Man's Prison, by T.J. Parsell
Q&A to follow with Filmmaker, Cast, and Crew
By the time he was 21 years old, T.J. Parsell had spent nearly a quarter of his life in prison; by 30 he’d put himself through college and was a successful software executive; at 40 he became a human rights activist, a published author, and one of the nation’s leading advocates to end prisoner rape. The term fish, prison parlance for a new arrival or first timer, comes from the phrase, “fish out of water.” Parsell now attends NYU Graduate Film School, where he is making a feature length film from his award-winning book, Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Man’s Prison (Da Capo Press, 2007). Parsell will show three short films, two of which are adaptations of his story, along with a documentary-short, which explores the root causes of crime and intergenerational incarceration. After the screening, local Sag Harbor resident Parsell will stay for a “Talk Back,” answering questions from the audience.
