"Clever Little Lies" Comes to Guild Hall

Clever Little Lies, written by Joe DiPietro and starring Marlo Thomas opens for previews at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Wednesday, July 16, and opens July 19. The play runs through August 3.

The play was staged last year at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey where it was favorably reviewed in The New York Times. The production has been transported from New Jersey to East Hampton.

The play tells the story a young man and new father who confides in his own father that he is having an affair. The father, who is sworn to secrecy, can’t keep anything from his own wife, spills out an botched version of the story. The mother then determines that she is going to save the her son’s marriage. She invites her son and daughter-in-law over for a visit. The play humorously explores life’s disappointments.

The New York Times praised the production and the play: The plot is fairly standard, and the individual lines are not side-splitters. But taken together and served up by a first-rate cast, it all produces some splendid chemistry. Joe DiPietro’s script is exceptionally actor-friendly, featuring lots of lively give-and-take among the characters, whose personalities are relatable and whose intentions are usually honest.
