Amagansett Life Saving Station Benefit August 1

The East Hampton Historical Society has organized a new exhibit, "June 13, 1942:  Saboteurs Land in Amagansett," which will open on August 1, with a benefit cocktail party for the Amagansett Life-Saving and Coast Guard Station Society from 6 to 8 in the evening at the Clinton Academy.

On the night of June 13, 1942, four spies were dispatched from a German submarine not far off from the Amagansett shore. They rowed to the beach, their boat laden with explosives. Their assignment: to attack hydroelectric plants, railways and bridges. The operation was foiled when a young Coast Guard from the Amagansett Life Saving Station came upon the Germans during his nightly patrol. The historical society exhibit will tell the story of the fateful night with period photographs and memorabilia.

Life-Saving and Coast Guard Station has since had a colorful history. It was moved from it’s original location to a site less than a mile away, off Bluff Road, and served as a private residence for nearly 40 years before being returned to its original site, where it is today. The Amagansett Life-Saving and Coast Guard Station now belongs to the community of Amagansett and is in the process of being renovated.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the benefit will go towards the completion of the restoration and renovation. Thanks to generous gifts for the reception, donations are entirely tax deductible. For additional information, or to buy tickets which cost $100, visit the East Hampton Historical Society website
