WSJ: Some in Sag Harbor Happy Not to Be 'Happiest Town'

They would rather pass up title than become major tourist destination.

In January, Coast Living magazine named Sag Harbor among the 10 finalists for "America's Happiest Seaside Town" — must to the chagrin of many residents who would like the village to remain a secret, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reports that Sag Harbor residents balked at the nomination, fearing that winning the title would mean tourists pouring in.

The Sag Harbor Express' Annette Hinkle reportedly told The Journal that "If Sag Harbor were to get this coveted honor, you would have all these cars coming into town, taking up parking, and then our happiness quotient would go down."

Coastal Living explained that the editors narrowed down every place named a Dream Town in the past 15 years and also took nominations over Facebook to get the 10 finalists.  Voting took place online, allowing people to vote one per hour for close to two months.

Sag Harbor was the only New York State finalist. It competed with Beaufort, S.C.; Harwich Port, Mass.; Kennebunkport, Maine; La Jolla, Calif.; Newport, R.I.; Rowayton, Conn.; Pa'ia Town, Maui, Hawaii; Pescadero, Calif.; and Sanibel Island, Fla. According to wsj.com, Beaufort was the winner.
