East Hampton firefighters put a quick stop to a basement fire at a mansion in the village on Monday night, Chief Tom Bono said on Tuesday.

Katie Beers on Kidnapper's Death: 'Helps Me To Close this Chapter

John Esposito, the Bay Shore man who kidnapped 10-year-old Katie Beers in 1992, holding her in an underground bunker for 17 days, died on Wednesday, while awaiting a parole hearing. 

3. Secretary of State Says East Hampton's Restructuring Is a Model

East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson gave New York Secretary of State Cesar A. Perales an overview of the town's economic recovery plan, the reason the state is rewarding the town to the tune of $500,000.

4. Tiny Napeague Property Sold for How Much?

Suffolk County officials said this week that a 1-foot-by-1,800-foot strip of land on Napeague sold for $120,000, according to a report from Newsday.

5. Springs School To Hire New Superintendent

A special meeting was held at the school on Tuesday to officially hire Jay Finello, who has worked as a superintendent in several school districts on Long Island, to lead the school through Aug. 31, 2014. Dominic Mucci, a retiree who served as the interim superintendent for the 2012-13 school year, cannot continue in the position after the State Commissioner of Education declined to sign an additional one-year waiver to allow Mucci to remain in the position.
