Week in Review: Burglary at Breast Cancer Patient's House Solved

Also: Firefighters battle fire in East Hampton.

1. Cops: Drunken Driver Found Sitting on Passengers' Laps

Police arrested the driver and a passenger after a traffic stop on a dirt road in East Hampton on Oct. 21. 

Police said James D. Selberg-Stross, 22, of East Hampton, tried to pretend he wasn't the driver after police pulled him over at about 8:30 p.m., but he was ultimately charged with drunken driving. 

According to police, they saw him driving on Route 114, near Cove Hollow Road, at a rate of 53 mph in a 30 mph zone when he made a quick right turn down a dirt driveway leading to a LIPA substation Police initiated a traffic stop, and saw the driver maneuver into the back of the car. 

2. Rocker Lou Reed Dies at 71

Lou Reed, the legendary rocker behind the Velvet Underground, has died. Reed, who had a house in East Hampton, passed away on Sunday, six months after undergoing a liver transplant. He was 71.

3. 5-Alarm Fire in East Hampton Quickly Knocked Down Overnight

Firefighters from five different departments were up overnight helping to bring water to a house fire in East Hampton. 

East Hampton Fire Department Chief Tom Bono said a call came in from the homeowner that 168 Two Holes of Water Road, on the corner of Whooping Hollow Road, was on fire on Thursday at about 12:30 a.m. When he got there, he found two rooms were on fire inside the house and the deck was ablaze. The flames were already through the roof, he said.

It was later determined to have started with an outdoor grill.

4. Burglary at Breast Cancer Patient's House in May Reportedly Solved

When police charged Justin T. Bennett with 16 burglaries in East Hampton Town this week, they also solved one break-in that garnered particular attention — a woman fighting breast cancer lost money that was raised to help with her treatment and for an upcoming cancer walk. 

5. East Hampton Man Held Without Bail on Charges Related to Child Porn

A judge ordered an East Hampton man held without bail after his arraignment late Wednesday, accused of transmitting child pornography, according to Robert Nardoza, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office. 

Michael S. Bonnet, 28, a registered sex offender who was still serving probation, was arrested on a complaint filed in federal court and is facing 15 years in prison if convicted, Nardoza said. A grand jury indictment, expected in the future, will determine specific charges, he said.
