Temple Restores 150-Year-Old Torah Scroll [PHOTOS]

Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor will dedicate the scroll later this summer.

in Sag Harbor has taken on the restoration of a 150-year-old Torah scroll.

Member sent in these photos that were taken on Sunday. She filled us in on the history:

In 1941, Jews in Czechoslovakia were deported to concentration camps and the contents of synagogues were taken. Many items were stored in the Prague Jewish Museum and then hidden in the valley suburbs of Prague. In 1958, hundreds of Torah Scrolls were transferred to London where an American Art dealer bought some. The Rabbi of the Westminster Synagogue, Rabbi Reinhart, was the benefactor who put up the money for most of the scrolls. In 1964, 1,564 scrolls arrived in London.  One of these scrolls was shipped to Sag Harbor in 1993 and received on behalf of Temple Adas Israel. This scroll is now being restored by a Torah scribe, Rabbi Gedaliah Druin. It will be used in services after its dedication on Friday night, August 24th.
