Soldier Ride Cancels 60-Mile Ride Due To Heat

The 30-mile leg of Saturday's ride is still on.

For the 2013 Soldier Ride The Hamptons there will be no 60-mile ride due to Saturday's weather forecast.

The Wounded Warrior Project sent out a notice on Friday evening announcing the cancellation of the longer leg of the route. The 30-mile portion — from Amagansett to Sag Harbor and back — is still slated to go on.

"Due to the heat, the 60-mile route option will no longer be a Wounded Warrior Project supported event," the announcement said. "Please make sure to hydrate and dress appropriately for tomorrow's weather forecast. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you enjoy the 30-mile ride."

The ride is dedicated to Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter, a Sag Harbor native who died in Iraq on April 22, 2008 at the age of 19.

The day's events include a bicycle ride, led by wounded veterans, and it starts at Ocean View Farm on Montauk Highway in Amagansett. There is also a 5K walk, which begins after cyclists leave t 9 a.m.

In Sag Harbor, there is a 5K walk, which starts at Marine Park, and also begins at 9 a.m.

Riders and the Sag Harbor walkers will gather for a tribute to Haerter at Marine Park after all the cyclists arrive in the village at about 10:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served there, as well.

There is still time to register, and registration opens at 7 a.m. The 30-mile route is $50, or $25 for those 21 and under. Both 5K walks are also $25.
