Scenescapes: Snapping Turtle Spotted Near Hands Creek

Trina Sullivan sent us a video of a guest in her backyard.

Trina Sullivan took this video in her backyard in Hands Creek Harbor last week.

She said the turtles are frequent visitors to her property. "In the spring, the female comes and lays eggs next to my house (I've never seen the babies hatch, but I've seen the nests dug up and broken eggs all over, racoons probably)," she told East Hampton Patch.

The turtle's shell is about a foot long; that coupled with "the first-size head and long tail -- it definitely looks like a dinosaur," she said. " And a fisherman once told me to keep my hands out of the water while kayaking because they can bite fingers off!"
