Village of Sag Harbor resident is U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom.
Sag Harbor resident Suzan Johnson Cook, the first woman and first African-American to hold the post of ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, appointed by the president, was honored by the village Saturday when a bench was dedicated in her name.
With more than 100 people in attendance, including Johnson Cook, herself, and several of her family members, the bench was unveiled on Main Street in front of Lee Jewelers.
The Rev. Rob Schenck dedicated a plaque to Johnson Cook from the national clergy counsel.
Johnson Cook's office monitors religious persecution and discrimination worldwide and develops programs to promote religious freedom, according to a media statement.
