Observe Veterans Day Sunday and Monday

East Hampton's annual parade is set for Sunday, while Montauk's flag ceremony is on Monday.

Despite the troubles many on Long Island are facing in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, let's not forget to honor those who served the country. Veterans Day falls on Sunday this year, and the Town of East Hampton is marking the day in several ways.

In East Hampton Village, local veterans will march from London Jewelers to the memorial at the Hook Mill for a short service. Waving a flag and applaud the procession as it goes down Main Street, led by the American Legion Post No. 419 and the local VFW post. It begins at 10 a.m. An 11th hour ceremony will follow at the Legion at 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served.

If you want to grab a bite earlier, veterans eat free at the Springs Fire Department pancake breakfast on Sunday. For everyone else, a stack is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children 6 and under.

Veterans Day observances continue on Monday in Montauk. A flag ceremony will be held at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center, at the Suzanne Koch Gosman Flagpole, starting at 10 a.m. Boy and Girl Scout troops will honor the veterans. Lori Hubbard will perform patriotic songs, and refreshments will be served in the Senior nutrition Center Dining Room afterwards. The community is invited to attend.

Please note, for most municipal employees, Monday, Nov. 12, is treated as a holiday. Town Hall and government offices will be closed.
