Good Morning America Sweet on Dreesen's Donuts

Chef Mario Batali declares them "some of the finest donuts ever made."

This week on ABC's "Good Morning America," the show was celebrating America's favorite summer treats, and one of East Hampton's most popular foods made the list.

Anchor George Stephanopoulos declared Dreesen's donuts his pick and Rudy DeSanti Sr. delivered a fresh batch for the live portion of the segment, which aired on Wednesday. Stephanopoulos said he gets some each weekend with his daughter.

Chef Mario Batali, on set that day, even said the donuts are "some of the finest donuts ever made."

"George Stephanopoulos has been a customer for years," DeSanti said. "I guess they were doing their guilty pleasurers segments and he said, 'My guilty pleasure is going to Dreesen's for the donuts'," DeSanti said. "I think they did a really good job."

The donuts — which are plain cake rolled in cinnanomin or powdered sugar — have made other television appearances before, including on the "Martha Stewart Show" and "World's Best Donuts," DeSanti said.

The donuts have been around since about 1950, when DeSanti's father and his partner started making them. DeSanti worked in the store since he was 8, and bought it in 1970. His son Rudy DeSanti Jr. took over the business in 2004.

Dreesen's Deli has long been closed, but the donuts are still made out of Scoop, the business that replaced it on Newtown Lane. The catering company and meat market are now located on Lumber Lane in East Hampton.
