Friday on LI: Lawmaker Vows to Stop Mass Mute Swan Killings

3:20 p.m.: The Suffolk County Parks Department is currently looking to fill seasonal positions for its endangered species protection program this summer.
The position involves helping to manage nesting shorebirds (piping plovers and least terns) at 17 sites throughout Suffolk County. Applicants should:
- Have an interest and/or coursework in ornithology, ecology, and natural resources
- Are able to meet the physical demands of the job: walking miles on the beach, carrying heavy fencing materials, digging trenches; all in typical summer weather
- Must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with others under stressful conditions
- Must be willing to work weekends & holidays, and flexible hours
- Have an ability to interact professionally with the general public
- Must be meticulous and concise in recording data
- Have a valid driver’s license (often required to drive 2-3 hours a day to visit sites)
The position pays $8.55/hour, up to 35 hours/week; housing may be available, indicate your interest. Use of your personal vehicle may be required.

1:30 p.m.: Due to heavy fog, Southwest Airlines and US Airways Express have canceled multiple flights this afternoon at MacArthur Airport. The airport is advising travelers to contact their airline for the most up to date info.12:50 p.m.: New York State Senator Ken LaValle has set out to save the mute swans from a plan pitched by the Department of Environmental Conservation that calls for mass killings. "I have had many ongoing conversations with the DEC on this matter while they are still in the comment stage of their proposal," LaValle said Friday. "Since it appears the DEC will not change course, I am currently drafting legislation to stop the plan to ensure that no further action is initiated until appropriate unbiased studies are undertaken."

9:26 a.m.: Friday's weather will be soggy and chilly, but don't give up hope — it's blue skies ahead for the weekend.
Tim Morrin, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Upton, said the worst of the weather will blanket the entire Long Island and New York City region with fog, drizzle, and chilly temperatures in the 30s on Friday. Low clouds will cover the region until Friday afternoon, when showers will move into the entire area from the west, some heavy. Rain is expected to taper off by early in the evening; some pondage could be expected on low-lying roadways.
But there's good news ahead: Saturday is slated to bring "plentiful sunshine," with temperatures close to 50 degrees across the region. Sunday will also dawn sunny, with the possibility of some clouds, Morrin said.
"If you have cabin fever, this weekend will be a good time to get out and about," Morrin said.
The fair skies won't last, though: A chance of snow is predicted for Wednesday, with another cold front moving through the region come Monday, and temps down into the 30s, and not even reaching freezing by midweek.
9:32 a.m.: Suffolk County Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone announced the first-ever implementation of the Suffolk County Pulse Point app yesterday. The new service, funded through federal grants, is the first municipal phone application on the East Coast that empowers CPR-trained residents to provide life-saving help to those in cardiac arrest.
“Suffolk County will continue to utilize the latest technological advances to provide life-saving assistance to our residents,” Bellone said.

“With hundreds of residents and emergency management personnel signed up in the first 24 hours, I ask any and all CPR-trained residents to download the application, sign-up for the service and join those who are already users of this life saving service.”
“This is about unleashing the potential of trained citizenry to respond to incidents of cardiac arrests if paramedics cannot arrive in time,” said Fire Rescue Emergency Services Commissioner Joe Williams. “This is a worthwhile initiative that will save lives.”
Available in the Apple and Android app store, Suffolk County’s PulsePoint App alerts CPR-trained bystanders to victims of sudden cardiac arrest that may require CPR. An interactive map feature directs users to the nearest location of an automatic external defibrillator, too.
