Enjoying Having East Hampton All to Ourselves

An answer to the question: What do you do it in the winter out here?

East Hampton is wonderful in the winter. I'm always amused when our summer visitors say: "What do you do it in the winter out here?"

As far as I'm concerned, winter is when the real living happens on the East End. This is the time we entertain friends for a cozy dinner at home, or go to a movie and pizza when the theater is empty and the restaurant owner is happy to see us. In January and February we attend lectures, go to local theater productions, watch the kids at the high school play basketball, and hold at church. These two months are the best in the year because we are more solidly a community now than at any other time.

By March we’re already thinking about “the season”. We’re starting to work on our yards and do handiwork around the house. The outdoors is beckoning and we’re getting the itch to see longer days and shorter nights.

But in January and February, we make our fun by being together. We have book clubs and knitting clubs and bridge clubs and choirs. We enroll in Adult Education classes and learn CPR.

We just simply enjoy having East Hampton all to ourselves.
