SOUTHAMPTON

Graduate Arts Program Receives $1 Million Gift

The Graduate Arts program at Stony Brook Southampton recently received a gift of $1 million.

The money comes from Southampton resident and Stony Brook Foundation Trustee Dorothy Lichtenstein, who presented a check on July 17 during the annual Southampton Writers Conference opening night, which featured a conversation about writing with former PBS News Hour anchor and novelist Jim Lehrer and his wife, novelist Kate Lehrer.

American Flags Desecrated In East Quogue

Vandals desecrated five American flags and four poles that graced the East Quogue village green in the overnight hours of last Thursday, according to the Town of Southampton.

Only the largest flag at the popular park remained flying.

The flags were found laying on the ground covered in dirt and mulch on Friday morning by residents, who notified the town.

The town has since replaced the flags that hung on the lamp posts and have cleaned up the park.

Kira Garry just finished her sophomore year at Yale University, where she runs both track and cross country. A long-time summer resident, Garry lifeguards at Kirk Park Beach and has run in the triathlon five times already. 

This time, Garry’s race will be different. She’s running in the memory of her friend Brian Hom, an Oyster Bay resident whodied during their senior year in a tragic car accident in 2011. Hom, 18, was a track star at Friends Academy and co-captain of the high school team.

'Save Main Road' Speaks Out Against Proposed Bowling Alley 'Billboard'

A civic group dedicated to preserving the rural quality of life in Riverhead and on the North Fork is seeing red over a proposed bowling alley sign that they believe will be a blight on the landscape.

The 'Save Main Road' group has been speaking out in recent weeks about a proposed 96 square foot sign pitched by the All Star bowling alley in Riverhead.

Tempers Ignite As Fireboat Remains Docked At Village Marina

A controversial fireboat that has sparked waves of discord in Greenport is still tied up at the village marina.

The board voted last month to move the fireboat to the railroad dock, despite a tide of opposition from fishermen and others in the community who raised safety and environmental concerns.

But to date, the fireboat has stayed put — and some are seeing red.
