Better Late Than Never: A Cygnet at Town Pond

Only one cygnet this season in East Hampton Village.

Finally, a cygnet arrives at Town Pond.

First seen on Tuesday at the East Hampton Village pond, the swans are a bit late in introducing this season's cygnet.

As nice as it is to see one baby, it's a bit alarming that there is only one, according to Steven Tekulsky, the unofficial commissioner of swans who keeps Patch informed on the happenings of the swan family each May.

"My guess is that there were more cygnets that were born and sadly did not make it to Town Pond," he said. The cygnets hatch at Hook Pond.

Last year, three cygnets were born around May 22. None of them survived to early adulthood. It was the first year, in as long as Tekulsky could remember, that no cygnets survived.

"I'm very hopeful that the cygnet who did make it will be strong enough to survive until he is ready to fly away," said Tekulsky (whom some may recognize as this year's Democratic candidate for East Hampton Town Justice).

Tekulsky nicknamed him "Hook."
