"Barcelona" Boat Party Floats On Despite Sunday's Rain

Boaters and bands still jet to one of Hamptons best parties.

For roughly 20 years, boaters have been gathering around Sag Harbor for a concert and party on the water. The rain kept some from coming from Conneticut and Block Island, but did little to deter locals, who set a course for the Sag Harbor Cove.

Known as the "Barcelona Boat Party," because it was initially held in Barcelona Neck off East Hampton, it's date and exact location is one of the Hamptons best kept secrets. "We're afraid we'll get 1,000 boats," said Charlie Canavan, who has been organizing it.

About 200 boats anchored, nearly half of what the party usually draws. Some hang out on rafts and floats while listening to the music.

A 60-by-40 foot long barge acts as a stage for bands to perform. On Sunday, the North Sea Band performed covers of the Grateful Dead, and Sheriff Bob's All Stars. Three other bands were slated, but stayed away due to the rain.

The morning's showers almost canceled the event. "I went out there to take stuff down," Canavan said. "But the sun came out and then the boats came out, so it was a party."
