Arrival of 30 Dogs Marks 10th Puppy Mill Resue for ARF

Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons will soon have placed over 200 puppy mill rescues.

The took in 30 dogs on Tuesday, marking its tenth puppy mill rescue, during which over 200 dogs will have been placed.

ARF received dogs rescued as part of the Best Friends Animal Society’s Pup My Ride program, which gets dogs from large scale breeding operations in the Midwest. More than 150 dogs were taken in by 15 rescue agencies.

"The situation found at many puppy mills in the Midwest is alarming," a statement from ARF read. "In order to satisfy the demands of pet stores and online consumers across the country, puppy mill operations churn out dogs in excessive numbers."

“The statistics are shocking – 98% of all puppies sold in pet stores nationwide come from puppy mills. A large percentage of these puppies are imported to the tri-state area where the demand is extremely high,” said Sara Davison, Executive Director at ARF.

“As the holiday season approaches the demand for puppies increases and it’s discouraging how many people turn to pet stores," she said.

The breeds received at ARF include cocker spaniels, chihuahuas, brussels
griffon, Italian greyhounds and more. They are from 4 months to 7 years old.

The dogs will be bathed and groomed, then spayed or neutered. Once medically cleared and socialized, they will be listed for adoption on the ARF website.
