Amagansett Gets Hospital Quality Blood Testing

The Southampton Hospital opens a new phlebotomy laboratory in Amagansett.

At 518 Montauk Highway, Southampton Hospital has opened a new satellite lab facility.

Though the medical term, as technician Lisa Strong will tell you, is phlebotomy, the new office provides hospital quality blood testing a little closer to home.

The medical center runs four other phlebotomy labs on the South Fork — one in Hampton Bays, one in Southampton, one in East Hampton, and one inside the Southampton Hospital itself.

The new Amagansett branch was opened to “provide greater laboratory access to the East End,” Marie Alessi, a Clinical Laboratory Supervisor at Southampton Hospital, said.  It is located across from the Amagansett IGA and just past St. Michael’s Lutheran Church and St. Michael's Housing, which opened this past winter to provide affordable housing for seniors.

The specific goals of the new center are to reduce wait times at the East Hampton laboratory, part of the East Hampton Healthcare Foundation Center at 200 Pantigo Place, and provide an easier outlet for medical testing for residents living further east in Montauk. To ensure it shares some of the East Hampton center’s burden, the Amagansett center opens a half hour beforehand.

Since opening on June 4, the number of patients seen daily has doubled from six on the laboratory’s first day to 12 this Tuesday.  The offices are open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
