#86 - Go Whale Watching, Find Dolphins off of Montauk

The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island will take you on adventure with the Viking Fleet.

From near and far, people flock to the docks in Montauk Harbor for all types of adventures on the water.

Here's one: The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, in partnership with the will take you out in search of various types of sea animals and pelagic birds.

Leaving from the Viking Landing on a recent Sunday, 130 passengers of all ages got on board the 140-foot "Viking Starship." The voyagers left Long Island Sound blending into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to a destination about 20 miles south of .

Although the ultimate goal was to "get lucky" and possibly see a Humpback Whale (with one seen just a few weeks back), all were delighted at the arrival of a highly energetic and aerobatic group of 280 common dolphins, with a surprise visit of two bottlenose dolphins.

Additional sightings included one basking shark and one Great White shark (at a safe distance, which breached three times). Bird lovers were not disappointed either with the arrival of 20 Greater Shearwaters, 20 Coreys Shearwaters, and 135 Wilsons Storm Peterals.

These one-day cruises leave every Sunday up to and including Sunday Sept. 4. The Viking Starship leaves promptly at 9:30 a.m., returning around 3:30 p.m. Advanced reservations are highly recommended.

Price: The fees are $69 for adults 13 years and up, with children fees of $35 for those 5-12.

Note: Viking and Cresli also run an overnight trip up to the Great South Channel which takes place Aug. 14 to Aug. 16. A trip for those who want a true sea adventure and to get up close and personal with Humpback, Finn, Minke Whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and various types of pelagic birds.
