New Hamptons Restaurant: Fresh

Tuscan Kale Salad
Tuscan Kale Salad
Fresh, courtesy of Chef Todd Jacobs, is now opened. Jacobs, who earned kudos as the chef at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor in the mid-90s and critical acclaim in Westhampton Beach at Tierra Mar, returns to the Hamptons with farm-to-table cuisine in a family-friendly environment that is affordable and accessible. A cottage-like exterior and manicured herb, vegetable and flower garden welcome guests into the restaurant. The industrial interior contains exposed steel beams supporting reclaimed wood walls, which surround from floor to ceiling. Comfortable black booths with small throw pillows line a window-spotted wall with wooden tables fill the rest of the space. The horseshoe bar with a wooden shelved back bar hides a television behind a rolling chalkboard sprawled with daily specials. Outdoor picnic tables next to the garden hosts a waiting area for guests.

Derived from natural and local ingredients, the menu is abundant with organic, raw, gluten-free and vegetarian options. Dishes include appetizers, entrées, sides and desserts with most available in multiple portion sizes. Salads, served during lunch and dinner, are $7 to $12 and include grilled Portobello mushrooms, warm baby spinach and smoked red onions with balsamic vinaigrette and shaved Parmesan, or diners may choose their own creation with the Fresh chopped salad. Jacobs offers a raw vegan soup along with another option daily, each for $8. Small plates range from $8 to $14 including a raw Fresh summer roll (with julienned hearts of romaine, beets, carrots, avocado, peppers, scallions, asparagus and local dried tomatoes wrapped in collard green leaf with tomato chipotle vegan aioli) and crisp fried Maseca dusted calamari with red chili and green herb aioli. Raw bar selections are also available. Most entrées are offered in quarter ($12 to $16), half ($22 to $28) and one pound ($40 to $52) portions and include hemp flour crusted flounder with organic carrot butter infused with ginger and lemongrass, and braised all natural boneless beef short ribs with Merlot wine sauce. Vegetables, served in small ($5) and large ($9) sizes – like hand cut fries with organic ketchup, “naked” organic jewel yams steamed and puréed, and collard greens braised with cider vinegar and southern spices – may also be ordered in combination plates of five ($20) or ten ($36) sides. Desserts satisfy the sweet tooth at $6 to $10 with classic crème brûlée, gluten-free brownie sundae with homemade vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream topped with fruit, and a white chocolate, yogurt and banana Napoleon with crisp filo and organic strawberries.
A bar menu is served late and take-out is also available. A full bar offers cocktails as well as wine and beer. A juice bar also serves Fresh organic fruits and vegetable smoothies and juices such as the signature organic cucumber spritzer.

A kids menu is available for children twelve-years-old and under for $15. Carrot sticks with yogurt dill sauce begin the meal. Entrées are served with steamed broccoli florets or sautéed spinach and choices include two classic sliders or gluten-free chicken nuggets with fries and organic ketchup; gluten-free macaroni and cheese, or grilled chicken Caesar salad. Dessert options are homemade ice cream or gluten-free brownie.

Fresh is open for dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Lunch is served in season Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for brunch Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The restaurant accepts all major credit cards; no reservations are accepted. Fresh is also wheelchair accessible.
