Dems 'Listen In' Thursday, Ditch Your Car Friday

Your guide to what's going on in the community.

Good morning, East Hampton. We're almost at the weekend. I know that makes me happy!

— How are you liking this cooler weather? I'm already missing summer. Today will be a bit warmer. The weather forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 73F.

— As a reminder, The East Hampton Democratic "Listen In" for East Hampton Village, Northwest Woods and Wainscott residents takes place on Thursday night at 7 p.m. It will be held at the First Presbyterian Church Session House, behind he church, in the village.

— The East Hampton Environmental Coalition announced that it has asked town board and supervisor candidates to address environmental issues facing the town ahead of the 2013 election. The coalition, which is made up of 12 groups, has distributed the survey and candidates have until Oct. 11 to answer questions. The survey will be made public on Friday, and results will be posted for voters to read after they are submitted.

— Why not ditch your car Friday? The first-ever World Car Free Day is coming to Long Island. The event was designed to highlight and reverse some of the negative impacts of travelling in single-occupancy vehicles. So bike to work, put on your walking shoes, or even hop the train. Will you take part?

— Looking ahead a bit — East End SEPTO is hosting a workshop with Carol Kranowitz, the author of "The Out of Sync Child: Understanding Sensory Processing Disorder and Its Effect on Learning and Behavior" at Southampton High School on Nov. 16. Register through Paypal on the organization's website.

— The American Diabetes Association says that every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes. The Department of Health Services, in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, will hold diabetes seminars, starting in October for county residents in the communities a bit further west. The closest seminar will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead on Monday evenings Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 18, and 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Seating is limited so register early by calling Anastasia Loper at (631) 727-7850 ext. 340 or email abl98@cornell.edu.
