Whole Foods Coming To Wainscott

A "pop-up summer farm stand" will occupy the former Plitt Ford dealership.

Health food consumers, rejoice; Whole Foods is coming to town.

While the commitment so far is only seasonal, the natural and organic grocery store chain confirmed this week that it is opening a "Whole Foods Market Farm Stand," a pop-up venue, according to spokesman Michael Sinatra.

The location, the former Plitt Ford dealership at 368 Montauk Highway, has long been a place that Whole Foods has been suggested for. Gregg Saunders, a retail and shopping center developer who lives in Sagaponack, owns several shopping centers where Whole Foods have been located and has expressed his desire see such a store, like Traders Joes, open there.

No formal opening date has been set, but Sinatra said the plan is for the market to be open between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Saunders has an application for a 17,5000-square-foot retail store for the property, in between La Capannina and Mark Anthony Rugs, before the town planning board.  Since Plitt Ford sold the property several years ago, it has sat mostly vacant.

The Animal Rescue Fund Thrift Shop moved in last winter when its shop was being renovated and Wyeth furniture show room was there briefly recently, but has now left the space.
