Trustees Cart 20,000 Pounds Of Litter Off Beaches

Debris on Lazy Point accounted for most of it, and there's still more to be done.

The East Hampton Town Trustees removed nearly 20,000 pounds of litter and debris from Lazy Point and Louse Point beaches last week.

Deborah Klughers, a town trustee, reported that 13,420 pounds of debris were carted off Lazy Point, and 5,880 pounds were taken off Louse Point. "That’s not including the commercial fishing gear that went to the Fishing for Energy Dumpster in Montauk," Klughers said.

She said they got help from pound trap and gill net fishermen, the Town Parks Department, and Land Acquisition departments.

Trustee Nat Miller organized the clean-up, along with Klughers. They were both there on clean-up days with Trustee Tim Bock, she said.

"We need to do another clean-up at Lazy Point. There is still more that needs to be removed, but it is looking so much better," she said.

That seems like a lot of trash. How did so much end up on Lazy Point? Where else in the Town of East Hampton needs a good clean-up before the summer? Tell us in the comments below.
