Sisters Open Health Food Store in East Hampton

The Logie sisters combined their love of cooking, baking and yoga to create a unique spot in East Hampton that offers customers healthy alternatives.

Simply Sublime, a health food store at 85 Springs-Fireplace Rd., opened July 17 with a small take-out cafe that offers fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies, made-to-order wraps and salads, coffee, and baked goods, including gluten-free and vegan options. The shelves are stocked with gluten-free pastas, all-natural chips, treats and frozen foods, fruit, vegetables and drinks.

Juliette Logie handles most of the cooking, preparing items like lobster salad, with secret spices, guacamole, gluten-free pasta salad, edamame salad quinoa salad, for instance.

Alison Burke is the baker in the family, and she's been experimenting with the gluten-free and vegan treats, like carrot cupcakes and chocolate peanut-butter vanilla cupcakes, already popular with customers. She said she likes being able to offer customers who have dietary restrictions a treat that is healthier, but also tastes good.

Going into business started with a dream of starting a non-profit organization to help adolescent girls navigate difficult times.

"We want to help adolescent girls sort of hear themselves through yoga and meditation and whatever else comes to be, so they can listen to themselves before they get into trouble," said Jeannine Logie, who is a yoga instructor and the former owner of in Montauk. "I feel that's a very powerful thing; your gut tells you what's wrong and what's right and you just don't know to listen to it until you get to be, like, 30."

The women, who are originally from Montauk, are all mothers to young children and the sisters had to first answer the question, Jeannine said, "How are we going to do that and support ourselves?"

They decided to use their experience working in restaurants to open a store that is still in-line with teaching teenaged girls about making healthy choices — the culinary, as well as everything else.

"We want to teach girls how to take good care of themselves," Alison said.

They transformed the 1,600-square-foot space during an extensive renovation that took three months (The small house was previously ). The cafe is bright and the layout simple, which was their overall vision. It's how they came up with the name, too — Simply Sublime, as in meaning to strive for enlightenment.

Juliette added, "We want to inspire them to do different."

Establishing the non-profit is still in the works, but they are already planning on offering yoga lessons to teens — and adults — as soon as next week.
