School Districts Cancel Wednesday Classes

Kids will have to celebrate Halloween at home — all thanks to the destruction Sandy left on the South Fork.

School throughout East Hampton Town will be closed on Wednesday, for the third day in a row, according to East Hampton School District Superintendent Rich Burns.

Burns said that the buildings in his school district were in "pretty good shape," but because of the amount of downed wires and trees throughout the township, the districts thought it would be too dangerous for buses to reach all students.

Schools were also closed on Monday and Tuesday.

In addition, there are some downed wires at the entrance of the East Hampton Middle School, he said.

Amagansett Superintendent Eleanor Tritt joined Burns at his office on Tuesday because her school is without Internet and phone service.

Most of Springs, including the schools, is without power, Burns said.

"If you could tell everyone, please spread the word," he said. The schools are having trouble reaching families since there are so many without power. There were over 15,000 customers experiencing outages as of Tuesday morning, according to LIPA's Power Outages map.

Halloween parades at all schools throughout the town were scheduled on Wednesday. Tritt agreed it was disappointing that they would be cancelled.
