Salivar's Sells for $3.3 Million

Real estate agency said the owners are embracing Salivar's history, even the Frank Mundus shark.

One of Montauk's most well-known establishments has been sold.

, a family owned and operated late-night spot where local fisherman have traded their stories for over 50 years, has been sold for $3.3 million, according to Judi Desiderio, the president of . The buyers, she said, are Brian Obergfell, a New York City attorney, and his wife Jo-Ann Obergfell.

According to the Town & Country's website, the .83 acre property, which includes six boat slips that can accomodate up to a 65 foot boat, was listed at $3.95. Desiderio said it had been on the market for one year.

“Salavar’s has been a fixture in Montauk for as long as I can remember," Desiderio said. "The sellers, who were a pleasure to do business with, were sensitive to Pete Chimpouckchis’ legacy, yet are pleased to see Salivar’s sell to such terrific buyers who not only love Montauk but embrace the Salivar’s name and history—right down to the Mundus shark.”

Salivar's is home of the world famous great white shark caught in June 1964 by Frank Mundus who inspired the captain in the movie "Jaws."

In a statement, Town & Country reported this sale as one of the first sales in the dock area in many years. "But there is an opportunity for another, since Town & Country is also presently representing the adjacent commercial property for sale - Lenny’s," which is for sale for $4.7 million.

"Known well as the only place in Montauk where you can get a drink and food 24 hours a day, this spot is a breakfast, lunch and dinner favorite for all," Salivar's listing description said. The restaurant has 53 seats inside and 85 seats on the outside patio overlooking the water with the potential for more seating outside.
