Rare Calico Lobster Escapes Dinner Plate

always has lobsters, but this is one that won't be anyone's dinner.

A rare calico lobster — splotched with orange and yellow — arrived at the Amagansett seafood shop last week in a shipment with 3,000-pounds of regular greenish-brown lobsters from Nova Scotia. 

Calico lobsters are found approximately 1 in 30 million, according to the New England Aquarium, which recently acquired a calico lobster found off the coast of Maine. Calico lobsters are the second most rare, with white being the most rare at an estimated 1 in 100 million. 

Charlotte Sasso, who owns the market with her husband Bruce Sasso, said they contacted the Riverhead aquarium to see if they'd like to put the invertebrae on display.

Her son Dante nicknamed the 1.3-pound lobster Spotty and until they hear from the acquarium, Spotty's staying put at Stuart's.

This isn't the first time Sasso has been in possession of a rare crustacean. In 2000, Stuart's received a royal-blue colored lobster, a genetic variation that occurs one in three million. Frank — named for "ol' blue eyes" Frank Sinatra, was eventually turned over to a marine biologist.
