Photos: Montauk Point Awash in Trash

It's impossible to discount the environmental impact of crowds swarming the beach at Montauk Point.

is a world-famous tourist destination, celebrated for its natural beauty and as a sportsman's paradise. But stare a little harder and you'll see the environmental impact all the crowds bring.

Forget the whale-watching, gnarly surfing and surfcasting. Trash and debris litter the beach, a collection of soda bottles, fishing line and detritus from weekend warriors and touring families. The proof is in the photos, taken July 8.

None of the items were staged. They were recorded as they were found.

It's unclear how much of the trash arrived on the rising tide or was left by careless visitors. The state Parks Department did not return Patch's call seeking comment.

What is clear is that one of Long Island's treasures is under ecological threat.
