Patch Picks: Must Reads to Share with the Kids

In honor of the National Education Association's Read Across America Day on Wednesday, Patch asked five local children's and young adult librarians to suggest their favorite books for kids. The 13th annual event is held in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and schools, libraries, and communities throughout the country take part as a way to encourage everyone to read. So, grab Green Eggs and Hams or one of these recommendations and read to the child in your life.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is Alexandra Giambruno's most beloved book because of the fond memories she has reading her daughters this book when they were young. The head of children’s services at , she said "This is a charming bedtime story that is very soothing to young children especially when tucking them into bed at night."

Miss Suzy, written by Miriam Young and illustrated by Arnold Lobel, is East Hampton's Young Adult Librarian Lisa Houston's pick. "Miss Suzy, a squirrel, is chased from her tree house by a bunch of ruffian squirrels. She escapes, moves into a dollhouse she discovers in an attic, rescues and mothers some abandoned toy soldiers who then help her regain her beloved home in the treetop," she explained. "This charmingly illustrated picture book highlights bravery, friendship, cooperation, and overcoming adversity."

Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You by Nancy Tillman was chosen by Susann Farrell, head of youth services at . "This book has a universal message that every parent and child can identify with... love has no bounds," Farrell said. "Children are reassured that their parents love will follow them wherever life takes them." Plus, the illustrations are fantastic. 

Square Cat written and illustrated by Elizabeth Schoonmaker was the pick from Amagansett Library's childrens and young adult librarian. Kelly Harris said Square Cat is really her favorite book. Eula is a square cat living in a round world. "Lucky for her she has two round and wonderful friends Pasty and Maude to teach her, her uniqueness is what makes her truly special."

Matilda by Roald Dahl is on Gina Piastuck's list for favorite children's books. The head of the Long Island Collection at East Hampton Library, she said. "There are few books I remember from my childhood as much as Matilda. Aside from being outrageously funny, Matilda tells the story of a little girl facing impossible odds, which she seems to overcome through sheer force of will. Literally!"
