No Cygnets Left at Town Pond

All three of the baby swans born this spring in East Hampton Village have died.

All the cygnets of 2012 have perished.

Steven Tekulsky, the unofficial commissioner of swans in East Hampton Village, reported the sad news Wednesday morning. "This is the first year that I can ever remember no cygnets surviving to the point where they fly away on their own," he said.

Just one week ago, and . They first appeared at Town Pond in mid-May.

"Since there were only three cygnets that made it to Town Pond (having been born somewhere in Hook Pond), it is not surprising that they did not make it as mortality rates for cygnets are fairly high - due to predators and disease," Tekulsky said.

He referred to at one of the rites of spring in East Hampton, waiting for the appearance of the cygnets in Town Pond, typically around Mother's Day. "Unfortunately, nature hasn't been very kind to the swans of Town Pond this year and we will just have to wait until next year for the cycle to begin again."
