Legion Opens for Those Who Need a Warm Place to Sleep

As temperatures drop on Saturday night, East Hampton Town will open the American Legion in Amagansett to anyone who needs a warm place to sleep and are still without heat due to outages from Hurricane Sandy.

Supervisor Bill Wilkinson said on Saturday that the town's emergency operations team and members of the American Legion are working together to open the doors to the American Legion Post #419, starting at 6 p.m. However, the onus is on those who decide to sleep there to bring all amenities, such as cots or refreshments.

East Hampton Town Police Department will provide security overnight, he said.

Temperatures will fall to 43 degrees on Saturday night into Sunday morning, but it will feel like 36 degrees, according to the Weather Channel.

According to the Long Island Power Authority's outages map, there are 3,281 customers in East Hampton Town without power — a number that is nearly double than what was reported on Friday.

Wilkinson said a decision will be made on a day-to-day basis if the shelter will remain open in the coming days.
