UPDATE: Firefighters Injured at Hampton Market Place Fire

The volunteers may have been exposed to noxious smoke or chemicals.

At least five firefighters were taken to the hospital after a fire at in East Hampton Village on Tuesday evening.

The condition of the firefighters was not clear immediately, though chatter on the fire department radio suggested they may have been exposed to Freon, or chlorofluorocarbon, an organic compound derived from methane and ethane. It's often found in appliances, such as refrigerators.

The working structure fire was first reported in the kitchen at the take out shop and market on Race Lane, near and the , at about 7:15 p.m.

The and responded, and quickly looked for backup from the , and fire departments.

Patch readers reported smelling the smoke from the fire as far away as the and near the intersection of Accabonac Road and Montauk Highway. Jillian M. Calderon told East Hampton Patch on Facebook that, "It was the worst smell ever -- almost like burning rubber."

It was not clear if the Hazmat team from East Hampton had been formally requested, though firefighters were told to wash off their gear and the trucks.

East Hampton Fire Department Chief Ray Harden was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday night.

The building is believed to be a somewhat old structure, having previously been .
