Fire Marshal Says Burner Was Left on at Hampton Market Place

Old spray-foam insulation burning looks like likely cause of firefighters feeling ill.

The East Hampton Village Fire Marshal has ruled accidental.

Kenneth Cullum said on Tuesday afternoon that the fire in the deli and market on Race Lane started in the kitchen with a burner that was left on.

As reported, after they fought the fire on Nov. 15. Cullum said the cause appears to be spray-foam insulation that was installed back in 1979 or 1980. "We've sent the foam to the county to test," he said, when asked about the insulation's makeup.

Cullum said he consulted with a local contractor about the spray-foam and learned that the spray foam used 30 years ago is different than what the spray-foam used today.

The firefighters were all released after being given oxygen at Southampton Hospital that night.
