Cops Use Taser on East Hampton Man After He Hurls Vase

An East Hampton man was shot with a Taser after police responded to a domestic incident in the Oak View Highway Mobile Home Village on Jan. 22.

Scott D. Golden's hands and clothes were covered in "a large amount of blood" when police arrived at 7:40 a.m. Police did not report anyone else hurt. In his arrest report, police said he was "out of control and extremely dangerous."

Officer Joe Monteil wrote in his report that he observed him in the kitchen leaning over kitchen counter. The house was in disarray — all the living room furniture was overturned and the kitchen and living room floor was covered in glass and blood, police said. Montiel said he called out his name, and Golden lifted his head, which was covered in blood from a large cut on his forehead. However, he only responded "with screams and grunts and spitting blood," police said.

The 43-year-old was wearing a large fleece jacket and only his underwear shorts. Police noted his legs and feet were also bleeding from walking on glass. "The suspect appeared to have no response to pain," the arrest report said.

Golden allegedly moved toward the officer, and picked up a large glass vase, which was filled with rocks and beach glass, and he yelled out. The officer instructed Golden to drop the vase, but he threw instead towards the officer. The vase missed the officer and shattered through a double glass window.

Sergeant John Claflin, who had arrived on scene, immediately deployed a Taser, but it did nothing to subdue Golden. He continued to move toward the officers. The officer tackled him with the help of Officer Troy Metzler, putting him in a face down position.

Officers held him down to apply the handcuffs behind his back and to put restraints on his feet.

East Hampton Village Ambulance Association transported Golden to Southampton Hospital. Two officers assisted EMS personnel, as Golden was "extremely uncooperative and combative spitting and shaking his head and body."

Golden was charged with assaulting a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and second-degree harassment, a violation. Southampton Town Justice Andrea Schiavoni arraigned Golden at his bedside at Southampton Hospital on Jan. 24. His bail information was not immediately available, but he was turned over to the custody of the Suffolk County Sheriff's office.
